Listening as Climate Justice

At the University of Campinas in Brazil, Professor Amasa Ferreira Carvalho is reimagining climate education through listening, dignity, and Indigenous leadership. Rooted in Buddhist humanism and her own journey from the Brazilian Amazon, she founded the Indigenous Sustainability Laboratory to support Indigenous engineering students whose territories are already facing climate disruption. Through dialogue, science, and lived experience, the Laboratory creates space for students to be recognized not as victims of climate change, but as knowledge-holders and leaders. For Amasa, climate justice begins when universities listen deeply, honour territorial wisdom, and allow faith to become courageous action for the Earth.
